Following my most recent post, “Baseball, the Great Escape,” I received an outpouring of emotional responses from family, friends, co-workers, and fans. One reader wrote:

I’m sorry that ALS took your mom too early but it’s clear that her ability to teach others has passed on to you. Thank you for sharing.

I have been asked by the Tampa Bay Rays–a  Major League Baseball team, for those of you who don’t follow the sport–to be featured in an upcoming full-length documentary about the history of spring training in the Tampa/St. Petersburg region. I will be flying out to St. Pete in a few weeks and will discuss the role of Dr. Ralph Wimbish, the central subject of my next book, Under One Roof: The Yankees, the Cardinals, and a Doctor’s Battle to Integrate Spring Training. Last year, the team produced a series of clips on the same topic. Click here to view it.

Speaking of Dr. Wimbish, his son, retired New York Post journalist Ralph Wimbish, Jr., has penned a foreword for Under One Roof.  Also, I’m pleased to announce that my beta readers have given it high praise. One reader said Under One Roof was a terrific new book” and “beautifully tells the whole inspirational story” of Dr. Wimbish. The book will be available on Thursday, May 19.

Finally, if you haven’t heard yet, the remake of Roots will premiere on the History Channel on Memorial Day and will run four consecutive nights (as opposed to the original, which aired eight nights in a row). The trailer (see below) has been released and has been viewed by nearly 900,000 users. Actors Forrest Whitaker will play the role of Fiddler and Laurence Fishbone will play Alex Haley, who I wrote about in Alex Haley’s Roots: An Author’s Odyssey. You can read more about the remake here.
